Artist's Statement: "Song and the Soul of a Young Girl"

The project "Song and the Soul of a Young Girl" is an exploration of the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan through the evocative mediums of film and photography. The inspiration behind this project is deeply rooted in the timeless folk songs of Rajasthan, particularly as they are remembered by a woman in love. As the eminent folklorist titles the broad category of folk songs as “Geeton ki Fulwari”, it is exactly like a garden of delights as one goes through while keeping a song…  These songs are more than just melodies; they are the living memories of a land that resonates with stories of passion, devotion, and the eternal dance between joy and longing. In choosing this theme, I aim to capture the essence of Rajasthan’s spirit, where every grain of sand carries a whisper of love, and every breeze carries the notes of an age-old song.

This artistic proposal presents a visual exploration of the folk songs of Rajasthan, as remembered by a woman in love. The project, titled "Song and the Soul of a Young Girl," delves into the rich cultural tapestry of Rajasthan — a land known for its vibrant colors, vast desert landscapes, and profound musical heritage. Through the mediums of film and photography, this project aims to capture the essence of Rajasthan’s folk traditions, intertwining them with the emotional journey of a young girl experiencing the intensity of love. Why Rajasthan?

What we understand of Rajasthan is a land of contrasts — a vast, arid desert that bursts into a kaleidoscope of colors through the attire, festivals, and art of its people. The choice of Rajasthan is not merely geographical; it is symbolic. Our understanding is extended as one of us marking the birthplace and another one looks through the media and the intangible fragrance is interpreted as fresh visual delight.

The region’s folk traditions have an inherent fluidity that transcends time, blending seamlessly with the voices of its people, much like how the desert blurs the line between earth and sky. Rajasthan's folk songs are born from this soil, yet they speak to universal human emotions, making them a perfect medium to explore themes of love, memory, and identity. The authors like Tara Prakash Joshi and alike working around the understanding and enrichment of the folk age would be utilised by rich visual connotations while implying lyrical song traditions.

The landscape of Rajasthan serves as both a backdrop and a character in this project. Its golden sands, vibrant textiles, and intricate architecture provide a visual palette that mirrors the emotional journey of the young girl at the heart of the story.
